Why Hello There! Welcome to the Enchanted Homeschooling Mom’s Berenstain Bears Curriculum (Part 1). I created this homeschooling curriculum for the 2011 – 2012 school year for our children. I am happy to be able to share this with anyone who would like to use this curriculum. Please note that I created this program from scratch and you may happen upon small spelling errors or Papa Bear head scratching worthy moments throughout the program. Should you come upon such instances, please contact me via email and let me know so that I may fix it for all of us. You will need 16 Berenstain Bears Books to complete this curriculum. My plan is to span each book into a lesson plan that is 10 days, or a 2-week period (so there are 32 weeks of lessons). I did take into account the time that our family takes off for Thanksgiving, Winter Break, Spring Break, etc. My thought process in making this curriculum was to take topics from books and expand them using worksheets, projects and discussions to make something children can relate to in the real world using our favorite furry family as our guides while having fun at the same time. Each lesson ranges from 20 minutes – 1 hour in length, but it’s really up to you and your child. I will be adding posts to my blog during the school year to show how our family has used this curriculum. I would absolutely love for you to also share your journey through Bear Country with your thoughts and perhaps some pictures. I do intend to make Part 2 to this curriculum for the 2012 – 2013 school year with different Berenstain Bear books and topics. Lastly, make sure you are having fun! Never be afraid to take items out or pull new items in to customize these lessons to your family. Please enjoy!

Materials Needed Please note that you can either purchase all of the corresponding storybooks or you can borrow them from your local library. I highly suggest purchasing the storybooks so that you have them on hand when needed. Please Note …
Depending on the age of your child you can either add to a lesson or take away from a lesson. For example I plan to have my son who is entering 2nd grade attach a piece of handwriting paper and elaborate on the writing assignments. My daughter who is entering Kindergarten will be completing the assignments on the given spaces of the worksheets.

While out of school for a few days with a cold, Brother Bear ignores his make-up work. And when he returns to class, he discovers the consequences of neglecting his responsibilities: he fails his division test. Grizzly Gramps helps Brother learn that it's never too late to correct a mistake. Topics covered:
Problem solving, honesty, decision making.
Read the story at the beginning of each lesson. Day 1:
Activity: Have your child (or help your younger child) do the story sequence worksheet on page 3. Point out instances of responsible and irresponsible behavior in the storybook and discuss them with your child.
Day 2:
Art: Have your child draw a picture of one of the character’s responsible actions.
Day 3:
To go with the picture that your child did yesterday, have them write the responsible action and how it makes them feel. For younger students have them write a sentence. For older students have them write a paragraph. Discuss their work with them.
Day 4:
Activity: Have your student make a list of responsibilities they have at home. Keep the list, as you will use this item on Day 8.
Day 5:
Discussion: What would happen if the builders who built your home didn’t do their best work? Have your child name several different types of community workers. What would happen if they didn’t try their best? Give your student the worksheet on page 4 and have him/her use tally marks throughout the day to describe the work they are doing.
Day 6:
Activity: Have your student make a community helper collage. Go over your discussion with them from yesterday. Make a collage using pictures from magazines and glue it onto a poster and decorate it.
Day 7:
Activity: Talk with your children about taking responsibility for their own actions rather than blaming others when something goes wrong. Make a town out of boxes (use empty paper towel rolls, shoe boxes, oatmeal canisters, etc.) to “play” this concept out. Make sure that you include some community worker characters in your town as well as some children at a park.

Day 9:
Activity: Help your student make a pretend thermometer with the labels: job completed, had to be reminded, job not done. The thermometers will show your children how responsible they are and ways to improve. You can make your own thermometer or use the worksheet on page 5.

Coach Papa Bear wants his team to play fair. But the other coach just wants to win. The Berenstain Bears shows that players and coaches should act in a way that pleases God. Topics covered:
Being a good sport, teamwork, friendship, mapping skills.
Read the story at the beginning of each lesson.
Day 1:
Activity: Have your child create a map of their home, favorite playground, etc. Please use the worksheet on page 7.
Day 2:
Activity: Have your child take a family member or friend to that location. Have your child give specific step-by-step directions (such as go left or straight). Do this multiple times to reach 4 or 5 items your child has placed on his or her map. Then discuss with your child how part of teamwork and being a friend is clear communication and helping everyone involved get to the end goal together.
Day 3:
Art: Have your child draw a picture that clearly shows how to be a good sport through teamwork. Perhaps your child could draw a picture of the family members and friends that helped in the activity yesterday.
Day 4:
Activity: Complete the writing assignment on page 8.
Day 5:
Cooking: Work as a team and make a recipe together. Then write about the steps that went into making the recipe on page 10 by using the example on pages 9.
Day 6:
Art: Grab a piece of paper and some crayons! Let your child design a team mascot or logo for your homeschooling family.

Day 8:
Discussion: What would happen if a sports team did not win a game and were poor sports? Would people be happy to play that team again? How do you feel when someone else does not play fair?
Day 9:
Activity: Allow your child time to come up with a team name that fits how he or she plays their favorite sport.
Day 10:
Activity: Have a backyard Olympics with family members and friends. What better way to learn the importance of teamwork and being a good sport than playing in some Olympic style games (such as a relay race – which can be done in a pool if you have one or with bikes in your driveway).

Ham'n'Cheese Ranch Roll-Ups By Anne Coleman (on Disney Family.com) Ingredients 2 eight-oz. pkgs cream cheese, softened* 1 1/2 c. grated cheddar cheese, room temp 1 c. low or fat free mayonnaise 1 envelope Ranch dip mix 3/4 lb. shaved deli ham, chopped 3/4 c. green onion, thinly sliced* 12 (8-inch) low fat or fat free whole wheat flour tortillas Directions 1. In medium bowl, mix together cream cheese, cheddar, mayonnaise, and dip mix until well combined. 2. Stir in ham and onion or cucumber. 3. Spread each tortilla thinly with ham mixture, leaving a scant 1/2-inch edge on one side. 4. Roll up and wrap tightly in plastic wrap; chill well. 5. Cut in half for sandwiches -- it will make 12. 6. Cut these into one-inch slices for appetizers.

When Mama concludes that there's too much "Me, me, me!" in Brother and Sister's behavior, she encourages them to help elderly Widow McGrizz deal with her full and messy attic. While the cubs are resistant at first, they soon find that there are rewards in giving a helping hand to those less fortunate. Topics covered:

Read the story at the beginning of each lesson. Day 1:
Activity: Make a “Good Citizen” Tree. Use brown construction paper and make a large tree outline to place on a wall. Each day add a new leaf to your tree using the leaf outlines on page 12 (you will need 5 copies). Make sure your child adds an important word or sentence to each leaf.
Day 2:
Discussion: Talk with your child about helping and being helped when you really need it. How have they been helped and cared for by others?
Day 3:
Using the worksheet on page 13. Take turns with your child listing things under both headings, and then figure out what it would take to move the items listed under ‘Uncaring’ over into the header of ‘Caring’.
Day 4:
Discussion: Talk with your child about the idea of helping and being helped. Talk about how you can help someone in your community, neighborhood or even in a different country.
Day 5:
Activity: Write a thank you note to someone who helps your child in the community (such as the postman, garbage man, etc.). You can use a blank piece of paper or use the worksheet on page 14.

Day 7:
Activity: Take a walk with your child in your community or have your child take a notepad with you on an errand and write down or draw examples they see of people providing assistance to others.
Day 8:
Discussion: Does your child know how to be a good citizen? Discuss with your child what it means to be a good citizen. Complete the worksheet on page 15 to reinforce how children can show courtesy and respect to others.
Day 9:
Discussion: Ask your child to describe the most caring thing anyone has ever done for them. What effect did that have on them? Then take your child to an elderly neighbor’s home to help for an hour.

Brother and Sister Bear want everything in sight, and they throw tantrums when they don't get what they want. Wisely Mama and Papa deal with this childhood malady by teaching the cubs about the family budget and the importance of appreciating all that they have already. Topics covered:
Needs vs. Wants, consumerism, persuasion.
Read the story at the beginning of each lesson. Day 1:
Activity: Create a Wants vs. Needs Poster board. Allow you child some time to cut out items from a magazine or newspaper. Then have your child glue them onto the appropriate side of the poster board. Explain to your child that it is ok to have wants but you have to take care of your needs first.
Day 2:
Activity: Using a pretend play kitchen (or just your kitchen table) set up a store. Gather some books, toys and play food items. Using the price tags on page 17 – 18 tape them onto items. Have your child go shopping using pretend money. Once their shopping trip is complete, go over the items with them they “bought”. Separate the items into wants and needs. Compare the total costs of each category and discuss this with your child.
Day 3:
Discussion: What is advertising? Where and when do you see or hear it? How do you decide if you really want to buy something? Complete the worksheet on page 19.
Day 4:
Activity: Have your child do the worksheet on page 20.
Day 5:
Read: Arthur’s TV Trouble . Discussion: What did Arthur want to get? Why do you think he wanted it so badly? Do you think his reasons were the same as Brother and Sister Bears?
Day 6:
Discussion: Talk with your child about persuasion. Explain how quiet often people buy things because of how an item is presented (either in an ad, by a salesperson or a celebrity). Have your child look around their room and see if there were any toys that they purchased due to an ad on the TV, radio or magazine that they would not have purchased if they did not see or hear the ad first.

Discussion: Talk with your child about ways to show others that you love them instead of purchasing a gift for them. Have your child choose someone that they love. Then give your child a piece of paper and have them draw a picture of something your child could do for that person without spending any money.

Activity: Help your child make a pretend commercial. Let them make a microphone out of an empty toilet paper roll. Go around your house selecting items that your child needs and items that your child wants. Let them act it out, then discuss how the ads that they view on the TV or hear on the radio are similar or different to what they just did.

As Brother and Sister Bear don their costumes to go trick-or-treating by themselves for the first time, they plan to avoid Miz McGrizz's spooky home. But during their Halloween outing, the cubs discover that appearances can be deceiving. Topics covered:

Activity: Select 2 – 3 ads out of a newspaper or magazine. Have your child look at them for a few minutes. Then discuss with your child whether they feel the ad is honest or misleading.
Day 4:
Activity: Put a glass bowl out on the table of M & M’s. Have your child look at them. Ask which is their favorite color and why? Then have them bite into several to show how they all look different on the outside but on the inside they are all the same.
Day 5:
Activity: Have fun role-playing today! Use the cards on page 22 to act out a scene, and then discuss the different scenarios and whether or not they are examples of honesty.
Day 6:
Read: Spookley the Square Pumpkin . Discuss how Spookley was judged on his outward appearances and through adversity he becomes the most responsible pumpkin in the pumpkin patch. How is what Spookley went through similar to Brother and Sister Bear’s Trick – Or – Treating adventure? Day 7:
Activity: Get your camera out and take some pictures of your child making different faces. Then print these pictures and spread them out on the table. Have your child discuss how they feel or look in each picture.
Day 8:
Activity: To reinforce the concept of responsibility, both in the home and in the community, make a chore chart with your child. Explain what will happen if the chores do not get done. Allow them to decorate it and hang it up.

Activity: Create a mask! Ask your child to create a mask out of a paper plate that is the opposite of how they look or feel today. When they have completed the mask discuss with them how outward appearances are not always as they seem.

Role Playing: Honesty (Allow your child to dress up and make it fun!)
Scenario #1 You are going to the park with Sam and Jane. Sam wants to ride his bike to the park. Jane wants to walk to the park. Jane asks you to walk to the park with her. You explain that your leg is hurt and you will have your Mom give you a car ride to the park. You decide to ride your bike to the park with Sam. When you get to the park Jane asks you why you didn’t walk with her?

The Bear family might not win the blue ribbon for their entry in the pumpkin contest during the annual Bear Country Thanksgiving Festival, but they do gain a new appreciation of the true spirit of the holiday and all that they have to be thankful for.

Read the story at the beginning of each lesson. Day 1:
Activity: Trace around your child’s hand, with fingers spread, to create a turkey placemat. The palm is the body, the thumb is the head, and the other fingers are the tail feathers. Let them decorate it. Then laminate it. Turn this into a game, by hiding their placemat at dinnertime under someone’s plate. They must find their placemat to see where they will sit.

Day 3:
Discussion: Talk with your child about Thanksgiving and some of the things they are thankful for.
Day 4:
Activity: Follow up on your conversation that you had with your child yesterday and complete the worksheet on page 24.
Day 5:
Read: The Pilgrims First Thanksgiving . Discuss with your child about the Pilgrim’s first thanksgiving. Ask your child what they think it would have been like to be a Pilgrim. Do we still eat some of the same foods today? Can you find any of the food the Pilgrims ate in the Berenstain Bear Family’s home or garden?

Day 7:
Activity: Make a card for each family member that will be your guest for Thanksgiving this year. On each card, tell that person what you love most about them, and why you are thankful for them being in your lives.
Day 8:
Recipe: Make the recipe on page 25 (from Family Fun Magazine). It is very simple to make and everyone in the family will enjoy eating them! We have made them for the last 2 years in our family.
Day 9:
Activity: Complete the worksheet on page 26.

Marshmallow Pilgrim Hats Here's a treat that looks old-fashioned but is made with two favorite modern-day sweets: marshmallows and chocolate.
Ingredients • •
24 chocolate-striped shortbread cookies 12-ounce package of chocolate chips
• •
24 marshmallows tube of yellow decorators' frosting
Instructions 1. Set the chocolate-striped cookies stripes down on a wax-paper-covered tray, spacing them well apart. 2. Melt the chocolate chips in a microwave or double boiler. 3. One at a time, stick a wooden toothpick into a marshmallow, dip the marshmallow into the melted chocolate, and promptly center it atop a cookie. 4. Using a second toothpick to lightly hold down the marshmallow, carefully pull out the first toothpick. 5. Chill the hats until the chocolate sets, then pipe a yellow decorators' frosting buckle on the front of each hat.

Mama Bear is tired of hearing how many Bearbie dolls Lizzy Bruin has and how many Game Bear video games Cousin Freddy just got. During a thunderstorm, Mama gets her cubs to realize that love and a good home are much more valuable than material possessions.

Read the story at the beginning of each lesson. Day 1:
Activity: Make a Thanksgiving poster to use for each day of this book. Title it: The _______ Family. Have your child give you an example each day of what they are thankful for.
Day 2:
Discussion: Talk with your child about what it means to be a thankful person. Explain to your child the importance of appreciating what you already have. Complete the worksheet on page 29.
Day 3:
Activity: Make an “I am Thankful” wreath. Using a piece of plain paper plate cut a large circle out. Fold it in half and cut out a half-circle to make the inner circle. Then print the leaves on page 28. Have your child write what they are thankful for on the leaves, color them and then glue them onto the plate. Lastly, hang your wreath up to share with everyone who visit for the Thanksgiving Holiday.

Read: Thanksgiving is for Giving Thanks
Day 5:
Discussion: Talk with your child about family. Ask your child why he or she feels that family is important? After your conversation follow up with the booklet on page 30-31.
Day 6:
Read: Giving Thanks: A Native American Good Morning Message. Ask your child to draw a picture to show what the Earth provides that they are thankful for.

Activity: Have your child pick out a toy or book that they have not used in a long time or outgrown. Take your child to a woman’s shelter, church, local fire station, etc. and have them donate that item for a child that has very little.

Discussion: Talk to your kids about scaling back your own family's Christmas presentgiving to one gift per child. Activity: Make some of your favorite holiday cookies or a holiday meal for another family in need with your child. Give your child the caroling book on pages 37 - 41. Who Pudding Feeds two hundred Whos . . . or four to six yous. At Christmastime, my favorite treat is something creamy, light, and sweet. “Who Pudding a la Cindy-Lou!” And here’s the recipe for you. Ingredients 2/3 cup long-grain (not converted) rice 3 cups milk 3/4-cup sugar 1-teaspoon vanilla extract 2 tablespoons butter 1/2-teaspoon salt 4 eggs, separated 1/8 cup of red and green M&M’s
What You’ll Need double boiler, medium-size mixing bowls, small-size mixing bowl, wire whisk, deep serving dish.
1. With the help of an adult, combine rice and milk in top of double boiler. Cover and cook over simmering water for 30 minutes or until rice is tender. 2. Preheat oven to 325º F. Beat egg yolks with a wire whisk until frothy. Stir 3/4-cup sugar, vanilla, butter, salt, and egg yolks into warm rice mixture. Mix well. 3. Grease a shallow baking dish. Pour in pudding. Bake for 35-40 minutes.
4. Remove from oven and let cool on a wire rack for 10 minutes. 5. Refrigerate overnight or for at least 8 hours. Top with red and green M&M’s before serving.

Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer had a very shiny nose. And if you ever saw him, you would even say it glows. All of the other reindeer used to laugh and call him names. Discussion: Ask your child these important questions. What is a stranger? A stranger is anyone you do not know. You cannot tell the good guys from the bad guys by how they look. You are responsible for keeping yourself safe when you are by yourself. You are responsible for taking care of yourself. You are not responsible for taking care of grownups. Adults who need help should go to another adult. Why did Sister Bear see everything as mean and scary?
Day 2:
Activity: Make sure that your child knows their name and address. It is equally important to teach them who, when, where and how to get help. Complete the worksheet on page 43. Repeat this activity once per day until you are confident your child knows this information.
Day 3:
Discussion: Copy or print Brother and Sister Bear’s Rules for Cubs from the last page of the storybook. Go over each rule with your child. Discuss the rules with your child until they understand them.
Day 4:
Activity: 911 Practice - go over with your child what to say when the phone rings and they answer it. Teach them the proper and safe things to do, like: not giving their name, not telling the person on the phone where they live, and not telling if they are alone. You can even have your child come up to the phone as you pretend to ring the phone and pretend to be the stranger. Have your child practice their telephone number and 911 by using the worksheet on page 44.
Day 5:
Discussion: What are your family rules about strangers? Make a family code word with your child. If a stranger does not know the code word tell your child not to speak with that person and to get away immediately and go to your family’s safe place/person (like a relative or neighbor).

Trace your child’s hands on construction paper and cut them out. Glue a crumbled tissue over the nose and then glue the hands over the tissue. Talk about covering our nose with a tissue when we sneeze, saying excuse me.

Discussion: Explain to your child that if they were the only person in the world, they would not need manners, but there are lots of people in the world. Discussion: Go over the chart on page 50. Then place the chart on the wall. Cut out the images on pages 50 –51 and have your child place them on a piece of construction paper. Laminate it and use as a placemat to help reinforce good manners.

When a store window full of colorful novelty kites gets the cubs excited about entering a kite-flying contest, Brother and Sister are surprised when Papa suggests they build their own kite instead of buying one. Papa and the cubs build a big old style kite together, which turns out to be too big to fly without an equally big wind. Regardless, instead of buying a store bought kite for the contest like all the other cubs, Brother and Sister decide to take their chances on ‘Big Red.’ To them, it’s no longer about winning or losing; it’s about taking pride in something they’ve made. They just want to see Big Red fly. As luck would have it, the wind picks up and, as all the store bought kites crash to the ground, Big Red flies so high, all the contestants join in and have a great time flying Big Red. Make your own Hot Air Balloon! In this activity you and your child will make your own toy Hot Air Balloon. Have your child make predictions about what will happen to the balloon and discuss it with them. Materials needed: 1 balloon 1 penny or rock yarn or string hair dryer
Step 1: Blow up your balloon and tie it to your string or yarn. Step 2: Tie your penny or rock to the other end of the string. Step 3: Using the hair dryer (on the lowest heat setting) make your balloon take flight by moving the hair dryer around and under it. Make sure you have some fun together!

Bean Bag Bear Project

Materials Needed: • • • • • • •
Sock (Any color or Size You Desire) Dried Beans or Rice Yarn Felt Wiggle eyes Craft glue Scissors
Instructions: Start out by filling the sock about 3/4 full of beans or rice. Cut a piece of yarn and tie the sock closed about 1" above the rice, leaving a little slack. You can also use glue to secure the yarn. Cut off any extra sock. Divide filled sock almost in half. You will want the toe section of the sock to be a little smaller as this will be the beanbag bear's head. Tie a piece of yarn tightly around the sock where it is divided so you make 2 distinct sections. You can now use felt to cut out arms, legs, and ears. Glue these into place. Also glue on the wiggle eyes. Use more felt or other craft supplies to add more details to your beanbag bear craft. You can use buttons, yarn, pom-poms, and just about anything else you have on hand.

Activity: Follow the instructions in the Berenstain Bears Grow-It! Book on pages 20-21 and help your child plant a carrot. You will need a carrot, dish or shallow bowl, pebbles and water. Watch your plant and help your child note any changes each day using the worksheet on pages 58 - 60.
Day 2:
Art: A rubbing is an easy and fun way to learn about plants, leaves especially. You will need crayons, paper, leaves, flower petals, bark, etc. Place any item on a table or on the ground with your paper over it. Take the side of a crayon and rub it over the item while holding the paper down. Hopefully your child will get to see all of the veins and textures of the items you choose to make a rubbing of the leaves, etc.
Day 3:
Activity: What is inside a seed? Give your child several lima beans. Ask your child how a seed turns into a plant? Show your child how to open a lima bean. Allow your child to tell you what they see inside of the lima bean. Put the rest of the lima beans in a small Ziploc bag with a small somewhat damp paper towel. Tape your small Ziploc bag to the inside of a window that receives a fair amount of sunshine. Watch over the days as a plant sprouts! Your child will get to see the plant and roots up close and clear.

Day 5:
Activity: Plant Pumpkin seeds with your child (maybe you will all be lucky enough to have full sized pumpkins by next Halloween!). Follow the instructions in the Berenstain Bears Grow-It! Book on pages 22 –23. You will need pumpkin seeds, 1 small to medium sized clay pot, 1 pebble, potting soil and vermiculite if you wish.

Mama Bear lays down the law when she notices that Papa and the cubs are getting too chubby. With the help of Dr. Grizzly's slide show on how the body works, the Bear family makes a healthful adjustment in their diet and fitness habits. Topics covered:
Health, food pyramid, junk food, healthy vs. unhealthy.
Read the story at the beginning of each lesson. Day 1:
Discussion: Talk with your child about what food items Brother, Sister and Papa Bear took off the shelves at the store. Will those foods help make the Bear Family feel good or bad?
Day 2:
Activity: Go over the food pyramid on page 62 with your child. Then have them keep track on a separate piece of paper how many foods from each food group your child consumes in one day.
Day 3:
Activity: Allow your child to create a “food plate”. You will need old magazines, glue, scissors and a paper plate. Have your child make a collage on their plate sorting and labeling items into the 4 food groups. Explain to your child that everything we eat and all of our favorite foods all go into one of the 4 food groups.
Day 4:
Read: I Am Not Sleepy and I Will Not Go To Bed . Discuss with your child about why getting a good night’s sleep is so important to being healthy.
Day 5:
Activity: Ask your child to draw some of the fruits and vegetables that they like to eat. Also have your child include fruits and vegetables that they find in your refrigerator, freezer, countertop or pantry.

Day 8:
Discussion: Talk with your child about how even though certain foods can taste really yummy (like ice cream, candy, cookies, etc.) it does not mean that they are good for us. These foods will not give us energy to swim, ride a bike, etc. Foods such as fruit, vegetables, cheese, bread and milk help give us super hero power to stay strong and healthy.

Discussion: Talk with your child about why it is important to Brother and Sister Bear to help save the Earth. What things did Brother and Sister Bear do to save Bear Country that your child could also do in your neighborhood?

Day 3:
Activity: Make “Junk” art with your child today. You will need paint, a large piece of paper and items such as: coins, forks, bolts, film containers, jar lids, etc. Have your child press their “junk” into the paint bowl and then press onto the paper. Repeat making different patterns. If you have a birthday or holiday coming up use this as homemade wrapping paper.

Activity: Complete the worksheet with your child on page 64. Discuss the answers once completed.

Read: The Lorax . Discuss the Earth’s environment and what problems can be seen around your city and in your neighborhood.
Day 8:
Activity: Take your child to a local grocery store that gives a discount for bringing your own reusable bags. Explain to your child how that store is helping to save the Earth. Talk to a manager and see if they do any other Earth saving things.

Activity: Have your child help your block or neighborhood today. Give them a pair of gloves, a trash bag, and then take a walk around your block or neighborhood and help your child pick up trash that they find. Explain to your child that one of the things they child can do to help with the Earth’s problems is to keep their own home, block and neighborhood free of trash and debris.

Discussion: Talk with your child about how they feel when your spouse goes to work. What do things does your spouse do to get ready for their job? What does your spouse say to your child before leaving for work? As homeschoolers our children learn at a young age that they also have a job, to do their schoolwork. Talk to your child about what he or she has to do to prepare to go to their “job”.
Day 2:
Activity: Complete the worksheet on page 67. Discuss with your child why they feel that way.

Art: How are you feeling? Give your child a piece of paper, pencil, crayons and markers. Give them some time to draw a picture of themselves or of a scene that represents how they are feeling today.
Day 5:
Read: Mr. Gumpy’s Outing . Discuss how Mr. Gumpy and his animal friends learn what happens in an overcrowded boat.
Day 6:
Activity: Help your child set up an area in your home for “getting ready for work”. Allow them to act out how they experience your spouse leaving for work each day or perhaps how your spouse may feel themselves when getting ready for work each day. Take plenty of pictures since I have a sneaky suspicion that there will be a lot of photo opportunities to share with your spouse later in the day.
Day 7:
Read: The Kissing Hand your child give it to their Dad.
Day 8:
Art: Give you’re child several pieces of blank paper, pencil, crayons, markers and paint. Select some music from all different genres (rock, country, classical, etc.). Play a song and allow your child to decorate the page according to how the music is making them feel. When they are done help them write the emotion on each page. When you are done your child will in theory have a book of different feelings and emotions. Hole punch the sides and use small pieces of yarn to tie together the book. Make sure to have your child share this project with your spouse when they get home from work.

Activity: In most homeschooling families the Dad is the one who sacrifices his time with the family so that the family can afford to homeschool their children. Now that your children have spent the last 2 weeks learning about the importance of Dad’s role and contribution to your homeschooling throw him a surprise party! Give the kids the afternoon to draw pictures and help you make a special surprise meal.

Activity: Using the chart on page 71, discuss the things that money can and cannot buy. An example would be that money can buy food but it cannot buy the wonderful feeling you get when you eat your favorite meal with your family. As your child comes up with ideas help them write them down in the correct column.
Day 5:
Discussion: Talk with your child about how they feel when they give a gift or do something kind for someone else.

Day 7:
Discussion: Brother and Sister Bear wanted to buy new clothes. What did King Midas want? How were Brother, Sister and King Midas the same or different?

Field Trip: Take your child to plant some flowers at an old age home or perhaps sing a song. If you have a shy child ask your child to paint several pieces of artwork instead. To many people just being given a hug and a beautiful piece of artwork can make their day, month or year. Explain to your child that this is what it means to be charitable and give to others.
